Icons and illustration

Icons

Eight sample icons on a blue field

Icons should have a uniform line weight and should represent objects using outlines only. Avoid filled or mixed styles, unless doing so represents an essential part of the information content of the icon.

Icons for actions and product sections should be uncluttered and render legibly at 24x24. Icons used decoratively (empty state, etc) can exmploy more detail, but should still be legible at 48x48.

Illustrations

Technical-looking illustrations

Use illustrations sparingly. We should always lead with the user’s data and our core functionality. It’s acceptable to use an image when:

  • The screen is correctly empty and we want to add visual interest
  • The illustration is an infographic explaining a complex operation
  • A screen overlaps with marketing, such as an invitation email

Illustrations should use the brand colors and should be dynamic and abstract. Recurring motifs are data flow, graphs, a mathematical diagrams. Avoid using concrete elements (people, objects) in in-product illustrations.
