We have three semantic states representing the disposition of an entity, event, or metric reading:
Good, No Attention Required
The user may review this item if they are curious about it, but we do not want to direct their attention here. We will typically not decorate these items.
- Color - Green or the default for the control
- Icon - Checkmark or none
- Weight - Standard
Warning, Attention Required
We believe these items require further investigation, but do not believe they represent an immediate danger to the health or integrity of the system. Users should be aware of them, but they do not represent an emergency.
- Color - Amber or orange, lower saturation than surrounding text
- Icon - Warning triangle
- Weight - Standard
Error, Not Providing Services
These items represent serious faults which compromise the ability of the system to deliver business value. Users should act to correct these faults immediately.
- Color - Red
- Icon - Octagon
- Weight - Bold
Warning and error may also be used as a treatment for screen messages. Screen messages may also be Informational.
Informational
Entities, metrics, and events cannot be informational. Reserve this treatment for screen messages containing supplemental information which we want to call special attention to.
